Saturn Sextile Pluto

Natal Saturn sextile Pluto gives steely determination and endurance which is put to practical use to create something of value, something lasting. These people have an amazing ability to focus on a particular project and see it to completion, they keep probing, keep working so hard like a machine. Systems and order are a high priority so there is often a systematic approach to life with strict regimes and structures in place to maintain order and a sense of security. However any strict self discipline does not restrict the creative process, in fact these people can find revolutionary new ways of doing things we might associate with Uranus. This may be the transformational nature of Pluto, combining with the expansive and creative nature of the sextile, then manifesting through Saturn results. Respect and high recognition can come from their achievements.

Saturn Sextile Pluto Celebrities

Nikola Tesla has Saturn sextile Pluto at just one minute orb. He was a world-famous mechanical and electrical engineer, physicist and inventor. Celibate and never married, he was so regimented and meticulous we would call him OCD these days. He started work every day at 9 am, ate dinner alone at exactly 8pm, at the same restaurant every day, served by the same waiter. His grooming, clothing and daily routine was highly regimented, “not because of personal vanity. Neatness and fastidiousness in clothes were entirely in harmony with every other phase of his personality.” Tesla had a photographic memory, spoke eight languages, and had an extremely strong work ethic, once working for 84 hours straight. He even showed this endurance while playing, often spending more than two days at a gambling table.

Astrologers with this aspect include Barbara Hand Clow (01′), John Partridge (16′), Karen Hamaker-Zondag (38′) and John Addey (49′). Others famous people with Saturn sextile Pluto in their natal charts include Michael Nesmith (10′), Leona Helmsley (11′), Muammar al-Gaddafi (12′), Joe Pesci (12′), Riley Keough (15′), Neil Bogart (20′), Alene Bertha Durek (22′), Janis Joplin (24′), George Harrison (26′), John Edwards (27′), Roberto Calvi (30′), Neville Brand (30′), Auguste Escoffier (38′), Orlando Bloom (49′), Mohamed ElBaradei (50′), Jeffrey Wigand (51′) and Paul McCartney (56′).

Saturn Sextile Pluto 2012-2013

The Saturn Pluto cycle lasts 33 years and describe the evolution of large scale, national or global structures within in society, politics and finance. In early 2013 we are now experiencing the waning sextile between these two heavy weights. So we are entering the final stretch of  the current cycle which began with the Saturn Pluto conjunction of 1982, and will close with the next conjunction in 2020.  For more information about Saturn Pluto cycles, and this one in particular, see Nick Anthony Fiorenza’s excellent and detailed analysis including the fixed stars in Synodic Astrology, The Saturn-Pluto Synodic Cycles, A Historical Exploration, 1851 – 2020.

There are three exact sextiles of Saturn and Pluto, the first was on 26 December 2012. Saturn turns retrograde on February 18 so this aspect stays within orb of one and a half degrees for a number of months from early December 2012 to late March 2013. The second exact aspect is on the 8th of March 2013, and the final one is on 21 September 2013. So we have this positive transformation of our structures going on but we cannot separate Saturn sextile Pluto from the much stronger and longer lasting influence of Uranus square Pluto, which is painting a backdrop of radical and difficult to deal with change and upheaval. The influence of Saturn sextile Pluto from November 2012 to November 2013 is positive and gives us the patience, determination and perseverance to find solutions to the crisis unfolding with Uranus square Pluto.

Saturn Sextile Pluto December 2012

Saturn Sextile Pluto December 2012The first exact sextile on the 26th of December 2012 involved the Yod to Jupiter. Thus growth, our values and morals were the focus. One manifestation of the focus on Jupiter growth was the fiscal cliff debate in US politics, aimed at achieving sustainable growth in tandem with debt reduction and tax increases. With Lilith conjunct Jupiter, the issues involved the treatment of women and we a starting to see structural reform in India (Kali Subdued). With Lilith sometimes being termed the baby killer, our Jupiter morals are in the spotlight following the Sandy Hook school massacre. Reform of gun laws in now on the agenda. These are all confronting issues which the Jupiter Yod threw up. Saturn sextile Pluto is facilitating the major reforms needed to address the issues, and the first small steps have been taken. We should see good progress as the story unfolds.

Saturn Sextile Pluto March 2013

Saturn Sextile Pluto March 2013The second sextile is on the 8th of March 2013 and this one looks promising. Mercury, Venus and Chiron are all together so there should be a cooperative spirit in negotiations with an emphasis on healing the rifts. This directly applies to the ongoing issues because this stellium is sextile Pluto and trine Saturn, very harmonious aspects which should facilitate productive dialogue. With both Saturn and Mercury retrograde, we can see the process is still unfolding but I expect good progress to be made. Another thing working in our favour is Jupiter sextile Uranus which suggests enthusiasm and open-mindedness to find original solutions to the Uranus square Pluto crisis. It also brings some unexpected good fortune.

Saturn Sextile Pluto September 2013

The third and final sextile between Saturn and Pluto falls on the 21st of September 2013. Did someone ever predict that women would rule the world? Well this chart suggests that women are at least going to be very influential in resolving the dramas we face this year. Too many aspect patterns to mention but I have not seen a Star of David look so prominent before. There is a ring around this chart of sextiles, and the energy does focus on Saturn, North Node and Venus. The others involved in the sextiles are Pluto, Chiron, South Node, Lilith and Ceres. Hence there is a strong emphasis on the dark feminine.

An evolutionary turning point with Pluto stationing direct on the 20th of September? Venus women taking responsibility with Venus conjunct Saturn, respect for women. With the North Node we could see this as a karmic turning point where women claim their authority. This stellium of Venus, Saturn and North Node are on a star called Nusakan which is in the constellation Corona Borealis, the Northern Crown. This is Ariadne’s crown, given to her by Venus.

Ariadne was princess of Crete, in charge of the labyrinth where human sacrificed were made to the Minotaur. She helped Theseus slay the Minotaur and fell in love with him. But she was dumped by the hero and ended up marrying Dionysus. Venus gave her the crown on her marriage to Dionysus. The mythology and the chart show that there are sacrifices to be made, and with the first sextile we saw the sacrifice of women and children. The outcome should be good though and we can hope to achieve the significant and lasting structural reform needed to work our way through the maze of dramas presented to us by Uranus square Pluto.

Jupiter Sextile Uranus

Jupiter Sextile UranusJupiter sextile Uranus has such a natural exuberance and zest for life that it attracts luck and positive energy to it constantly. This aspect thrives on change, novelty and new inventions and will often generate this for themselves and for others. These people are natural visionaries and inventors who often make their impossible dreams come true. Their sheer faith in future rainbows keeps them focused on doing whatever it takes to get to the pot of gold. This will attract the right people and the right circumstances into their life that help manifest their lofty ambitions.

A change is as good as a rest for these people so they never end up in a rut. They are never one place long enough either mentally or physically to become stale. This aspect can create a really off-the-wall sense of humour and a surreal mindset. The negative side can be an overly idealistic vision of their Utopia which does not allow for failure, natures imperfections or any concept that messes up their grand symmetry.

The pursuit of ultimate personal freedom and right to express their unique individuality can result in living an elitist and exclusive existence which may not have been the intention, but somehow becomes the reality. Jupiter sextile Uranus can come up with beautiful blueprints that work “In an ideal world” but falls apart when human frailties and foibles play into it. Generally this aspect when positively placed in the chart brings makes manifest grand concepts, bring refreshing change and makes the subject an inspirational and unforgettable mentor to future generations.

Jupiter Sextile Uranus Celebrities

M C Escher (27′), Dutch graphic artist whose work often depicted the impossible. Mainly printmaking, very architectural and inspired by geometry. As a child he was sickly and placed in a special school aged 7. He failed academically but excelled in drawing. He briefly studied architecture but switched to decorative arts due to illness. In 1922 he travelled extensively throughout Europe and Spain. The highly decorative and intricate designs at the Islamic palace Alhambra in Granada were a major influence on his art thereafter. He met and married his wife Jetta in Rome where they settled and had a son, but moved to Switzerland for two years to escape Mussolini’s dictatorship. Unhappy there, the family moved again to Brussels, but WWII forced another move back to Holland. The most famous of his works were the impossible reality of “Drawing Hands” and “Relativity” in which the normal rules of gravity do not apply. He also experimented with trying to represent infinity on a two dimensional plane. His work continues to inspire popular culture and both science and art. His life clearly reflects the freedom of movement of this aspect and the Uranian need for rejuvenating change. His work is a great example of the creative merging of science (Uranus) and spirituality (Jupiter) in such works as “Gravitation”.

Napoleon IV Of France (00′); Only child and therefore successor of Emperor III. Had to flee France and was exiled to the UK. On the outbreak of the Zulu war he pleaded to be allowed to go to Africa. But this resulted in his early death dying at the hand of a Zulu spear. His demise caused an international scandal. Tony Garnier (08′); French architect whose grand designs were inspired by his sociological perspective on housing. He created Une Cite Industrielle, a Utopian way of life for a population of 35000 with vocational schools situated next to their workplaces and no churches or police since it was hoped that the people would be self governing. Ceres Discovery (08′); The eternal spring, the innocence and optimism of childhood that has big dreams for the future is reflected in the chart’s Yod to which this sextile forms the base.

December 28 Full Moon – Revelations

december-full-moon-2012The Full Moon on 28 December 2012 is at 7º Cancer on Mirzam in the front paw Canis Major. This Full Moon has something to woof about and will transmit through asteroid Pythia, the oracle goddess which is conjunct the Sun. This Oak Full Moon is the first of the winter solstice where light is dawning again after the longest night. Mistletoe, the fruit of the oak was sacred. It represents endurance and calling on great strength from within. The Yod to Jupiter conjunct Lilith draws great power and determination from the Saturn sextile Pluto. Out with the old, in with the new.

Religion is the focus with this Full Moon igniting the big Aldebaran Jupiter Yod of the year, which peaked on the infamous date of December 21 2012, the day before the winter solstice. “We may see the raising of global spirituality to a new level of acceptance and understanding. We may well see the best and the worst at the same time, and this polar extreme is something common in the effect of the Royal Stars (Aldebaran). As Bill Tierney wrote about the Yod: “arriving at a fork in the road and having to proceed in one direction rather than another without knowing where it will lead to.” Our faith will be tested heavily at this Full Moon. For some the 21st seems not to have heralded the paradigm shift that was hoped for, at least not in an obvious way and not in an instant. There is no quick fix to consciousness. Isn’t that just like Jupiter though, here we are a week later and not one of his overblown promises have materialised! “Patience” says Saturn sextile Pluto. This transformation is slow but thorough; no stone will be left unturned.

Full Moon Aspects

Full Moon December 28The Moon is heavily aspected, Sun quincunx Jupiter of the Yod has utter faith that the path they have chosen is the right one. But “by putting so much of themselves, their identity on the line, if the scales tip then they can show the Jupiter tendency to excess in a negative way, through guilt or addiction.” One must use the energy of Sun conjunct Pluto to keep strong and focused on the goal ahead and not self-destruct before you get there.

The Moon trine Saturn; “has a strong need to prove itself to the world”.  The trine will soften the zealous energy of that Aldebaran Yod and tone down some of Jupiter’s tendency go overboard with its crusading. Saturn will also command Jupiter to put its money where its mouth is. The Pluto sextile Saturn is a relentless power surge pushing Jupiter to manifest something out of its hot gas. However it is this gas, which inspires Pythia’s prophecy. You cannot have a dream-come-true without the dream.

Moon opposite Pluto; “The Pluto scapegoat receives all manner of “evils” projected onto them from the other side of the opposition. These subjects find it difficult to trust others with their feelings or secrets, yet somehow they become the catalyst for bringing to light others peoples deepest darkest demons. They can push the collectives boil to the surface” In the mundane world what looks like is being brought to a head then is some covert operation to do with organised religion. We still have the Uranus square Pluto in orb, which this Full Moon is turning into a T-square. So the political upsets, intrigues, sex scandals, and exposes that have been the background of the year are again highlighted. We could see women attacking sexist religions and protests in the church, very apt since this Moon falls just after Christianity’s feast of the nativity.

Full Moon – Asteroid Pythia & Mirzam

Mirzam is in the constellation of Canis Major which also houses the great dogstar Sirius. Mirzam is known as the announcer star because it rises before Sirius and barks like dogs do before anyone in the house realises there is someone at door. Pythia is an oracle, some one who can envision the future. Here we have the power of foresight, predicting an outcome and having the confidence to stand by ones vision of the future. Jupiter as the focus of the Yod is also the planet of speculation. Pythia however can also be someone whose visions of the future are dismissed as crazed ranting. So we might see those in power branding any unpalatable truth revealed about themselves as deluded and paranoid “conspiracy theory’.

december-full-moon-2012At this time of year where we take stock of the year gone past and assess what is possible for the year ahead. We make projections and assess trends. The Yod will make us strive and focus on our 2013 mission. Rather like the October 29 Full Moon which had a Diamond Yod, there is a lot of action around 7 – 9º of the zodiac. This time the cardinals will feel the effects of this Full Moon most (And I do mean the clergy as well as the signs!) and it will amplify the Uranus square Pluto transit they are already dealing with. Cardinals will be called upon to justify their actions and be transparent with their plans. 7 – 9º Geminis will simply get bombarded by bible bashers.. This Full Moon will prompt to make some important announcement publicly, like getting engaged or summoning someone to court. In doing this we will feel we are pushing the dream towards manifestation.

Full Moon Keywords

Broadcasting, media speculation, summons, sermons, speculations, reviews, visions, big promises, manifesting dreams, pushing forward plans, priestesses V priests, revolutions in the church, revelations, bible bashers, idle thrashers, blowing hot air, projections, probing secrets, no stone unturned, endurance, empowering, power hungry, doomsday prophesies, heretics, conspiracy theorists, scapegoats, holy ghosts.

Moon Trine Ceres

moon-trine-ceresMoon trine Ceres seems to give great luck and the ability to bounce back from tragedy. Their fortunes tend to fluctuate from one extreme to another, but they take it all in their stride saved by their ability to see the funny side of life. Their sense of humour gets them out of the stickiest of situations, but they can have quite a dark side to their comedy too. This is also an extremely sensuous aspect with an appreciation for the aesthetic and general good taste. They can be quite indulgent and love their luxury, however they are generous too and charity is important to them. Moon trine Ceres are fascinated by history and can be very nostalgic. Family and their ancestry is important to them. They like to keep archives and preserve the past for posterity. Passing on their talents to the younger generation seems to be strong with this aspect as is having some inheritance to hand down to their children. As with all Ceres aspects the need to nurture is marked and they will do this in the most basic, material way. Providing food, warmth and shelter to those they love.

Moon Trine Ceres Celebrities

He came back into fashion again in the 90’s with guest appearances on the topical satirical quiz “Have I Got News For You”. He married twice and had two sons, one had cerebral palsy and the other died of a heroin overdose. He claims to have had many affairs in his first marriage because his wife was unfaithful. February 10 New Moon – Lady Luck

$

new-moon-february-10-2013The New Moon on February 10 2013 is at 21º Aquarius 43’ in the fishtail of Capricorn, but it is also within orb of “Luckiest of the Lucky” Sadalsuud in Aquarius. The closest aspect is Moon trine Ceres. It is conjunct Asteroid Velleda, which is a supermop in the UK, but otherwise a real life Germanic prophetess circa AD 69. I predict luck then! Dare to dream big with this New Moon. Predicting a glittering future could generate self-fulfilling prophecy. So be lucky, but be prepared to put in the graft. Shiny surfaces are high maintenance.

The New Moon chart contains two triangles reflecting each other. On one side, Venus is connected to Saturn sextile Pluto; “Steely determination and endurance which is put to practical use to create something of value, something lasting.” This could be a romantic union or an art project. Venus square Saturn suggests there is some hardship involved; maybe some deferred gratification, a separation in order to create something more solid in the future. Across the New Moon there is Jupiter sextile Uranus, innovation, experiments, freedom. In some ways it is the the very opposite of the learning triangle above it. This sextile is fuelled by an impatient Mars. It is a warrior, brave, bold, risk taking, but could be a tad reckless.

Jupiter here is activating the Spicy Lunar Eclipse of November 2012 as it is on Prima Hyadum in the Hyades. This was the eclipse with the very destined Jupiter Yod which had Lilith conjunct Jupiter at the apex. These two mini learning triangles* maybe apart, but they are still linked by two tenuous trines. There is still a connection, a karmic link, a little like the cord that holds together the two fishes of Pisces that swim in different directions. The chart seems to suggest two entities need to learn their lessons separately. This could also symbolise an organisation that splits itself in two in order to cater for two different markets.

New Moon Horoscope

New-Moon-february-10-2013The New Moon squares the nodes; it looks like a crossroads between the past and the future. At this New Moon we may be standing there between two paths, stuck because we haven’t made the decision to go one way or the other. The fish tail of Capricorn is known as the “Gate of Return” or “Gate Of Angels” that brings transformation of mind and spirit. It unites sensible earth with sensitive water. The legend goes that the gods in their war with the giants were driven to Egypt, Pan jumped into the Nile and turned his lower body into a fish’s tale. This is where this stars feeling of being persecuted comes in, water can feel victimised at times. There are strong emotions churning beneath the waters surface, while above there is the capable, cool goat. Those affected by this moon will need to show their vulnerabilities, show that they care.

The star the New Moon is closest to is Nashira which translates as “The Fortunate One, or the Bringer of Good Tidings”. That is the second mention of luck during the New Moon. Although there has been a need for transformation as signified by the star on the goats tail, this change will be lucky. What is interesting is that Robson says of Nashira “It causes overcoming by evil, which is turned to success.” This may mean a perceived act of “evil” is necessary in order to ensure future luck and triumph in one’s life. This act of “evil” maybe having to sack someone when you know the person has mouths to feed. But this is short-term pain, for long-term gain and having to be cruel to be kind.

New Moon Aspects

Moon trine Ceres; “Seems to give great luck and the ability to bounce back from tragedy. Their fortunes tend to fluctuate from one extreme to another…. They like to keep archives and preserve the past for posterity. Passing on their talents to the younger generation seems to be strong with this aspect as is having some inheritance to hand down to their children.” There we go with luck again and also thinking long term. In the mundane world Ceres of course can be ecology and ensuring we do have a planet to had down to our children. This New Moon would be a good period to start an ecology focused group or anything that works towards creating clean energy.

new-moon-february-2013Get out your Velleda supermop and clean away all the grub that stands between you and success then. Looking polished and regal will show you respect yourself and that will be reflected back to you, law of attraction and all that. The Sabian symbol for this New Moon is “A rug placed on the floor for children to play on”. This brings us back to Moon trine Ceres and wanting to protect those we love from the hard knocks of life. The rug can be a safety net so we can let go and throw ourselves around a bit or we can find it restricting. The rug is only so big, so do we dare go past its comfy, familiar edge and risk scraping our knees? Saturn is the cord that is binding the two learning triangles together in the New Moon chart, it places a limit, like the rug in the Sabian symbol. With this Moon we have to assess how elastic we can make our relationships, we can stay connected but only with a great deal of flexibility and room to manoeuvre. The Mars trine Saturn in the Full Moon chart cannot be a ball and chain.

New Moon Keywords

Re-potting, elastic connections, luck be a lady ;) , creating the future, self-fulfilling prophecy, protection, no pain no gain, cruel to be kind in the right measure, transmutation, conservation, lessons for growth, passing on talents, long term plans, showing vulnerabilities, self respect, valuing yourself, preserving dignity, safety nets V risk taking, deferred gratification, faith in the future, endurance, creating something of value.

*Learning triangles are an aspect pattern used in the Huber school of astrology. Learning triangles can be large or small, but always comprise of a red, blue and green aspect. In this case, the planets in square create the conflict, there is karmic adjustment between the planets of the semi-sextile then harmony is restored by the planets in sextile.

Aquarius Decan 1

decan 1 aquariusThe fixed stars of Aquarius Decan 1 are a focused, bold, aspirational and quirky bunch in the arrow, the eagle, the goat, the microscope and the toucan. The sun aligns with these stars approximately from January 20 – 29. The first star in this decan is Sagitta the arrow, said to be the weapon which slew the eagle Aquilla that ate from the liver of Prometheus. Uranus is the modern ruler of Aquarius, and its attributes as a planet have more in common with the myth of Prometheus than it does with that of the God Uranus.

Prometheus was the hero known for stealing fire from the gods, which in turn enabled civilisation to occur. His great hubris was punished however and the gods tied him to a rock. Each day Aquilla, Zeus’s eagle would peck away at his liver, which would grow back infinitum to be eaten away all over again. Decan 1 Aquarians can get consumed by an idea and they have an insatiable appetite for acquiring wisdom. The rock symbolises the connection to Aquarius’s traditional ruler Saturn. Decan 1 Aquarius seems to represent the quest for scientific knowledge and advancement, but also can over reach itself.

Aquarian Stars

*1º04’ Aquarius ~ Sham in Sagitta the arrow.
1º47’ Aquarius ~ Altair in the heart of Aquilla the eagle.
3º46 Aquarius ~ Gieda Prima in Capricorn’s horns.
4º43’ Aquarius ~ Oculus in Capricorn’s eye.
5º38’ Aquarius ~ Alpha Microscopium in the Microscope.
9º40’ Aquarius ~ Alpha Tucana in the Toucan.

Since Aquilla the Eagle is the largest star in this decan and Sagitta slew it, it’s almost as if Aquarians can shoot themselves in the foot on occasion. Aquarius can be the lone genius whose best intentions to improve the conditions of humanity can sometimes result in ruin. Frankenstein is a good example. Aquarians can be great humanitarians, but are often accused of lacking compassion. This is because of their tendency to keep such a distance from those they are trying to “upgrade”. Tying Decan 1 Aquarians to Prometheus’s rock is probably the only way to keep this space cadet on planet earth and keep them in touch with reality. Decan 1 Aquarians will often find their “rocks” in relationships, but they will often blame their partners for tying them down and cramping their style.

Sagitta as the arrow, is a weapon that is fired from a distance and the eagle too observes from a great height, swooping down onto its prey only at the very last minute. They are quick to swoop down onto a novel idea too, their fast processing mind can rustle up an article or prototype at a moments notice. These boffins respond well to tight deadlines and working under pressure. Decan 1 Aquarians can too often shut them selves up in their ivory towers creating great utopias but fail to conduct research at ground level. This can get them in to trouble in relationships because they can fall in love far too quickly, jumping in at the deep end while ignoring practical considerations. They then suffer terribly when their big dreams are shattered. On the positive side, Altair is brave, bold and daring precisely because the high perspective does not allow it to get bogged down or distracted by irrelevant, domestic drudgery.

Nutty Professors

aquarius decan 1Decan 1 Aquarians are visionaries, they are forever chasing new horizons, and as they hover above the clouds their mind is always open and free to wonder and catch an innovative idea from the ether. Gieda Prima in Capricorn’s horns work in this decan like antennae picking up insights brewing in the collective consciousness. This is a futuristic decan at the cutting edge of change. The eye of the goat here too has foresight and like the Eagle, this goat from it’s mountaintop can also see far into the distance. The goats influence on tropical Aquarius here is pure ambition and great focus, however it can be so intent on pursing it’s goals it can suffer from tunnel vision. Decan 1 Aquarians can find it quite difficult to live in the here and now. The inclusion of the microscope here is interesting because again this is about focusing on one issue very intently. This time the “distance” is created by the  machine that places a barrier between the observer and it’s subject. This is the famous Aquarian detachment, hiding behind a lens. It also fits well with the rather nutty professor feel about this area of the sky.

At the end of the decan we have the rather comical looking Toucan who gives Decan 1 it’s kooky and sometimes garish appearance. Toucans toss objects such as berries in the air and jest around with each other playing “catch”. It’s a behaviour that earned them the title of the joker of the forest. Toucans can actually pitch and are said to never miss their target, which takes us back to the focused aim of Sagitta the arrow again. Toucans use their long sharp beaks to duel with each other much like a fencer. The word bicker comes from beak. Decan 1 Aquarians enjoy a good verbal fencing match, their political rants can be entertaining but they sometimes go too far with the vitriol. Toucans are known to be one of the noisiest birds in the forest…

Aquarius Decan 2

Aquarius decan 2The fixed stars of Aquarius Decan 2 reside in the goat, the crane, the swan, the southern fish and the dolphin. The Sun aligns with these stars from approximately January 31 until February 9. This is a gentle breed of water bearer, things are a little more mellow here, but it doesn’t mean this section is any less eccentric than Aquarius Decan 1. There is still the famous Aquarian rebelliousness; only here they are mostly mild-mannered. In Decan 2 we find the brooding and sometimes insolent Aquarians. These are the folk who dig their fixed-sign heels in real deep if you try to push them while at the same time beaming you an arresting electric grin. This is the Uranian smile that zaps you into laying off them.

Willpower is very strong here and we get great success from this decan mainly because they are too darn stubborn to be swayed from pursuing their goals. In this section we get influence from the water bearer itself with Albali in the left hand of Aquarius, this star in Arabic means “The good fortune of the swallower”, curiously named because this star appeared to absorb the light of some of the stars in the horns of Capricorn next to it. Maybe this gives this decan the ability to restructure and modernise someone else’s work.

Ptolemy makes the following observations: “The stars in the shoulders of Aquarius operate like Saturn and Mercury; those in the left hand and in the face do the same”. So these people are incredibly studious and have a real patience for close, detailed work. Here we find Alnair in the crane “A retiring, active, proud, watchful, kind, idealistic and devoted nature, with a liking for astronomy.” There are dotted around this sector many other stars in the crane and also one in the microscope which further supports the geeky tendencies of this decan. Apart from Armus, most of the stars here are shy and placid, The dolphin, crane, southern fish and swan are all animals that relate to water in some fashion. Even Capricorn has a fishes’s tail, so this decan really does form a bridge between air and water. Aquarians aren’t noted for their sensitivity, but I beg to differ when it comes to Decan 2. Their watery side is kept hidden though and they will tend to bottle up their feelings.

Aquarian Stars

*11º 43’ Aquarius ~ Albali in Aquarius
12º 44’ Aquarius ~ Armus in the heart of Capricorn
15º 54’ Aquarius ~ Alnair in Grus
16º 16’ Aquarius ~ Delta in Cygnus
17º 15’ Aquarius ~ Iota in Pisces Australis
17º 23’ Aquarius ~ Sualocin in Delphinius
19º 22’ Aquarius ~ Gamma in Delphinius

There is something very playful and innocent with the dolphin’s strong influence within this decan. There is also a bit of a Lolita feel too. Sualocin is very sweet and naive and the Crane is known for it’s elaborate courtship dances. (See Skakira!) Decan 2 Aquarius can be surprisingly shy, but is also a bit “come hither”. These people are quietly alluring, peeping at you coyly with an inviting twinkle in their eye. These are the unexpectedly super-sexy magnetic Aquarians, a sign not really noted for its sex appeal in the way the other fiery or earthy signs are. There is an ethereal romance here also with the swans influence, it is a bittersweet bird with it’s lovely white feathers cloaking a black skin. Both the swan and the crane share long, regal necks so Decan 2 Aquarians have something very stately about them, they are proud and hold their head high through the most traumatic of situations.

Aquarius Decan 2These are the ice kings and queens of the zodiac, if you dump them there will be no drama, no yelling or unbecoming sobbing. How uncouth! These subjects will simply glide away without a fuss or ruffled feather. It’s literally water off the ducks back, with their valuable self-respect remaining intact no matter what. However, don’t think for one minute you have got away with it, these subjects have a way of getting revenge similar to fellow fixed sign Scorpio, and just like Scorpio, this punishment is always served stone cold! Because of Decan 2’s cool-as-a-cucumber demeanour and elevated heads, they are sometimes accused of being snobs. Yes they are aspirational like decan 1, but their sensitive feelings keep them human and make them more sympathetic than your typical Aquarian. This is due to having a star here aligned with the southern fish, which also houses the mystical and imaginative star Fomalhaut. This fish is the one the water bearer stands upon and the water from his urn is shown pouring into this fishes open mouth. According to Staal, “The fish drinks the waters of the flood to save the world.” Aquarius’s humanitarian, saviour-like qualities come through strongly in this decan due to this placement. Some of the celebrities like Barack Obama or Jim Morrison carry a messianic-like quality about them. Remember the symbol for Christianity is also the fish.

Superior Ducks

Armus in Capricorn can be quite preachy. This star I nickname the “nagging star” since it is rather unfortunately defined thus by Robson “It gives disagreeableness, contemptibleness, instability, shamelessness, nagging and a troublesome and contentious nature.” Positively this star I believe gives tough love and tries to motivate people to better themselves. This maybe perceived negatively by those who like an easy life. Decan 2 Aquarians have very high expectations of their spouses and may give them a very hard time if they don’t match up to their ideal. In their disappointment and despair, they may indeed have no shame in using rather extreme tactics to get them to “man-up”. This decan can find itself saving a partner who has addiction problems or some other handicap which makes them come across as the long suffering martyr. At its worst manifestation, the “stuck-up”, tall-necked aspect of the swan and the crane may even subconsciously pick weak partners in order to feel superior.

astrologykingDarkstar changes for 2013. Some news for all regular subscribers to the monthly horoscopes. Jamie has a new website called Astrology King. This is new site focusing specifically on horoscopes. It has taken a while to set up, so for this reason the February horoscopes will be late this month. Aries through to Scorpio are done so you can go and find them at astrologyking.com. I will be putting links to them on my “Fixed Stars In The Signs” menus in the sidebar also. Eventually Jamie hopes to do weekly horoscopes too so keep an eye out for those. You can subscribe to his site to keep updated and he also has Facebook, Twitter and Google + pages for the site also.

I will be adding to the “Fixed Stars In The Signs” menu as we go through the year. I have done Aquarius decan 1 and 2 so far. This is a new project which I hope will result in a “Fixed Stars In The Signs” book looking at them through the decans eventually. I will continue with client readings solo as I have been doing for a while now and have recently added a 6 month reading which replaces Jamie’s 1 year and 3 month readings. There will be no more joint readings unfortunately since writing horoscopes is very labour intensive as you can imagine.

We came to the decision to manage our own sites because we found we were compromising our approaches to please two different audiences. Fixed stars is an intermediate, specialised approach, whereas the horoscopes are really a gateway into Astrology. Eventually I would also like to offer Darkstar Astrology courses, but that’s way in the future. For 2013 I need to finish my Lilith/Dark Moon book and continue with the Fixed stars research, which will form the foundation of a future Darkstar curriculum.

Happy New Year dear readers! Thank you all for your continued support. Jamie and I are both very excited about 2013 and what it will bring for our two sites. We hope to bring you the best of both worlds, from London UK to Coffs Coast Australia, night and day…

Mercury Retrograde Feb 2013 – Sky Scraper

mercury retrograde february 2013February’s Mercury retrograde journey takes us through constellations Pegasus, Aquarius, the Phoenix and the Sculptor. Pegasus makes tall promises for the future. It is a visionary constellation but with it also comes high expectations, so you better darn well prove that your money is where your mouth is! This is an ambitious, sky-scraping area of the cosmos and has Uranian qualities of genius and flashes of intuition. This area contains many stars known for having prophetic ability. However it’s volatile, impulsive nature sometimes shows bad judgement and capriciousness, so be careful not to skid on the slippery watersnake. In your dreams you will gladly go with the flow of the mythical river Eridanus only to be rudely awakened by a freezing bucket of Aquarian water.

Retrograde Meaning

Mercury goes retrograde and the traditional advice is “Don’t travel”, “Don’t sign contracts”, “Don’t marry” or “Don’t look at your computer or it will blow up!” But the whole Mercury retrograde cycle actually lasts eight weeks and happens three times, sometimes even four times in a year! That’s a long time to hide under the duvet and a real waste of a truly magical time.

Mercury generally zips between two worlds, or rather, the two hemispheres of our brain. So during the retrograde period it is like Mercury has gone down into the Underworld. In the realm closer to spirit we become more right-brain orientated. It is dark, so other senses are heightened. We will feel extra sensitive here, psychic even. Everything will seem hyper-real… you will notice things you had overlooked before. This will prompt you to re-evaluate, renovate, re-invent, re-form, and reinvent. It’s true you might have to redo things, because Mercury will hit the same degree three times, mercury-retro-february-2013but what this transit won’t let you do is to go into autopilot.

There are danger spots though. When Mercury is stationing retrograde we are at the wobbly stage where we are likely to slip up, make mistakes, and misread another’s communications. But once we are over the threshold and into the Underworld, we can safely go about out business knowing we are in another realm. The same goes for when it is stationing direct – give our brain a few days to adjust back to solar thinking. Whichever houses Mercury retrogrades in, will be your Underworld zone. Here you will question everything. It will make you jittery about signing contracts, because you will be constantly thinking, “Is this what I really want?”. Before the retrograde, is a good time to finish off those Solar left-brain projects and gather information to bring down into your cave at its retrograde point. Then you can slow things down, let yourself be taken into other dimensions, try on different filters, experiment, shine a light on your demons, then recharge and reboot.

Mercury into shadow

Mercury enters the shadow zone February 9, starting on fixed star Biham in Pegasus’s head. This is a fantastic opportunity to brainstorm with like-minded intellectuals. We get this influence for the Lady luck New Moon on February 10. The warrior and the messenger coast along together around February 11-12. People may be more aggressive in their speech and you may notice some Internet tantrums when the Moon ignites this fiery conjunction in the flying horse’s head. After Valentines Day we get Mercury square Lilith. I think we may see some Valentine fallout when a spouse uncovers some saucy messages from a lover. Dangerous days…As Mercury slows down we get a very interesting learning triangle between Mars/Mercury, Ceres/Lilith and the North Node that will lasts until February 28. This is our Mercury retrograde lesson.

Mercury Station Retrograde

mercury-retrograde-feb-2013From February 23 then, we get Lilith conjunct Ceres which is very much a Persephone aspect. The most powerful theme here is either having ones childhood stolen or being a child stealer yourself. This doesn’t have to be negative, it could even be something like winning a child custody battle. This aspect can also be healing with herbs or numbing pain with medication. This squares the ongoing Mercury/Mars conjunction, at worst this could be drug-fuelled arguments and domestic violence. The media may broadcast more rape stories, violence against women or a child abduction, something that will cause a storm of protest much like the Delhi Rape case recently. Lilith is actually on Hoedus in the twin kid goats, so there could be some sexual scandal for the media to get hysterical over. The sleaze factor is very high over this period. However the media reports these unfortunate incidents, it will be seen as overly sensationalized and distasteful.

Mercury-RetrogradeThe North Node connects Lilith/Ceres and Mercury/Mars for karmic balancing, ironically the North Node is on Zubenelschemali the northern scale of constellation Libra. This is the fortunate scale, therefore hopefully the public outrage I mentioned should provoke justice being done and for some quality control over the mass media. On March 2 Mercury aligns with Ankaa in the Phoenix, the learning triangle dissolves and lessons are learned as we rise up out of the flames.

March 3 our thoughts are liquid as we surrender to fate while floating along the religious star Achernar in the river. “Well-placed, it promises happiness and success by giving good morals, faithful adherence to one’s religious beliefs or philosophical inclinations. According to tradition, Achernar is credited with bestowing high offices in the church”. [1] A person of good moral standing will mop up the mess brought to a head at the February 25 Full Moon. Mercury slithers tentatively through the watersnake on March 5 while at the same time making a stunning stellium with both Chiron and Venus. They all make a magical minor grand trine with a Moon conjunct Pluto triggering the Saturn sextile Pluto bringing “steely determination and endurance which is put to practical use to create something of value, something lasting.” to the cosmic table.

Minor-grand-trineMarch 6 is the cold shower of Aquarian awakening! Wow, this is a great opportunity for healing relationships that have been suffering from Mercury retro miss-understandings. Don’t miss this perfect opportunity for a really deep, heart-to-heart with a loved one. Reconciliations and rekindling the flames of passion are well starred until March 9. Mercury starts to slow down as it approaches the head of Pegasus once more. While it does so we get an intense Sun square CeresThere seems to be a theme of loss, abuse and pain…triumph over adversity.” And also in the sky a Lilith square Venus which tends to emphasize triangular relationships. This may bring a resolution to issues brought up at the start of this retrograde period.

Mercury Station Direct

Mercury out of shadowMercury stations direct on March 17  in the romantic, clever, but hissy Swan. Ingenious solutions to relationship problems with a sudden surge of intellectual clarity and focus take us out of this intense but very healing Mercury retrograde. Mercury forms a tender alliance with Chiron as it moves out of the shadow and on March 29 it forms a stunning merger of two aspects patterns, a “Model” and a “Bathtub” (or double Yod) in Esoteric astrology. This is like a blueprint or an architects drawing. Moon conjunct Saturn is all about foundation building, creating the family nest or a solid business base. Keep these grand plans under wraps for the moment if you can contain your excitement that is! You can unveil them with a grand fanfare on April 6 when Mercury is out of the shadow and we have a lovely marriage of Venus conjunct Mars in the sky.

Aquarius Decan 3

$

aquarius decan 3Aquarius decan 3 brings the confrontation of the old with the new, this is the most revolutionary and edgy decan of Aquarius. This decan marry’s the swan’s unbridled imagination (and libido) with the transformative spiralling tail of the sea-goat. The tail is known as “The Gate Of Gods” which was said to be the portal of ascension back to heaven. Therefore this area is a departure gate, the last boundary between one dimension and another.Saturn rules both Aquarius and Capricorn and is the last planet one can see with the naked eye. It has no illusions and is plain speaking. This is Aquarius at its most scientific and sceptical, but at the same time is open to explore other realms, it just needs to test them out first. This testing is very marked in everything they do.

Decan 3 Aquarians test limits, push boundaries and most of all test peoples patience! The goats influence here is at its most capricious and devilish, mainly because of the swan’s poetic influence. These are the flirty, Aquarians, the ones with a “horny” sex drive and seductive pan pipes! Remember the sea-goat was originally the god pan. The swan is artistic, the male water-snake is sleazy and the goat loves a good romp, so this is the typical bohemian hedonist and seducer. This decan works so hard, it believe it has also earned itself the right to play hard too.

Decan 3 Aquarians can be skittish and playful like the foal. Some of them, despite their intelligence can manage to come across as real airheads. I love the now obsolete constellation of the air balloon used to be around here. Others are more like the “Devil-may-care” Fool in the tarot, a wondering troubador with a dash of Peter Pan thrown in. They tend to push their luck but somehow get away with it through a blend of genuine innocence and sheer good fortune. Sadalsuud is the 2nd brightest in this sector and known as the “Luckiest of the Lucky”. Robson though seems to think this star also causes “trouble and disgrace.” This is probably due to its flighty nature and unconventional behaviour. It’s influences seem to cause domestic trouble, difficulties in marriage, intrigues, home wrecking, “peculiar marital conditions..” Yes, we get the picture. This is the Aquarian famous commitment phobia. They dump you, but then want to keep the cake and eat it. So you get the line. “ But we’ll still see each other, you’re my best friend!…”

Aquarius Stars

Aquarius 21º 47’ ~ Nashira in the fish-tail of Capricornus.
Aquarius 23º 07’ ~ Kitalpha in Equuleus the foal
Aquarius 23º 24’ ~ Sadalsuud in the left shoulder of Aquarius.
Aquarius 23º 33’ ~ Deneb Algedi in the fish-tail of Capricornus.
Aquarius 24º 50’ ~ Sador in the breast of Cygnus the swan.
Aquarius 27º 45’ ~ Gienah in the wing of Cygnus the swan.
Aquarius 29º 10’ ~ Delta Hydrus in Hydrus the male water snake*

The brightest star in Aquarius decan 3 is Deneb Algedi in the fish-tail, The “Fortunate one” and “Bringer of good news”, it seems to sway between one extreme to another as Robson finds “It is said to cause beneficence and destructiveness, sorrow and happiness, and life and death.” Very often Aquarius decan 3 lives on a knife-edge, as I said earlier, here is the revolutionary and activist, always on the frontline of change. These people are the innovators, the breakers of moulds and societies catalysts for change. A restless, experimental, inventive mind will bring success in their career but inevitably their personal life suffers. It is very hard for these subjects to get excited about mundane, domestic matters and they are often accused of being cool, distant and distracted by their family. They get bored very easily and need constant novelty. Some are in such a constant state of flux that it is difficult for them to put down the roots necessary for a stable homelife. They may operate better as the eternal bachelor or bachelorette or need a very open minded partner.

Judge Mental

capricornusDeneb Algedi is also known as the “Judicial Point of the Goat”. Capricorn has a strong air of authority and can be quite judgemental and critical of others who do not share their high standards. Even though these people might be pretty unconventional, they do have their own moral code that they adhere to quite rigidly. Decan 3 is where Aquarian stubbornness excels. They are very much all or nothing, they do not commit to anything easily because they know how vacillating they can be. Conversely when they do finally jump in, you can expect rock solid immovability. Be patient, it really will be worth the wait if you can stomach the manic Saturn testing. They just have to lock themselves in their lab, conduct a multitude of experiments, then run you through the study over and over again until they are satisfied with the results. With those Aquarian Peter Pans who do manage to grow up, the sudden change is often extreme and shocking. One day their Aquarian friend was a punky, leather-clad, chain-smoking, hard drinking reactionary the next they are a teetotal, clean-cut, respected, pillar of the community. Sometimes it can happen the other way round of course with the midlife crisis turning a “goody-two-shoes” into a debauched drop-out.

Whether they are extreme rebels or uptight conservatives Aquarius decan 3 will stay true to themselves above all else. Sometime they are purposely contrary to the mainstream because they just want to make a point about being an individual, so if everyone is wearing suits they will turn up in jeans and vice versa. They enjoy breaking the rules and toying with convention. Their purpose is to forever question and provoke the status quo. Aquarius decan 3 cannot abide sheep mentality or “Keeping up with the Jones.” That’s not to say they aren’t impressed with high status. It just has to be done their way! Decan 3 Aquarius can also be a great inverted snob, so they will be impressed with niche markets, exclusive clubs, boutiques, cults, and anything cool and anti-populist.

Full Moon February 2013 – Lion Taming

$

full moon february 2013The Full Moon on February 25 2013 is at 7º Virgo. The archetype of the mentor guru V the lusty prodigy is very strong here with Chiron and Jupiter involved with a testing T-square. This moon is also important as a now direct Jupiter is still re-activating the spicy  November 2012 Lunar Eclipse  in the stormy Hyades. This time it is on Ain, the wandering, lusty, left eye of Taurus. Half-man/half-beastie boy Chiron in this moon suggests a real need to transmute our animal urges. This full Moon will bring the Lady Luck New Moon issues to a head, but also remind us of our original plan that was seeded back in November.

The Full Moon is conjunct Asteroid Cybele, this mountain lion goddess is a full-on rave queen wild cat, with this Jupiter square she certainly will be roaring rather than purring. “Cybele is a sabre-toothed Ceres on steroids… with claws.” She may be wild but she is still wiser and older than her young manservant Attis. She has something to teach him about the wild side…This is one of those moons where you should go to a shamanic drum healing circle run by an eccentric old hippie. You will learn much. The Sun is conjunct Chiron in one of the most sensitive psychic decans of the zodiac. So there is a great potential for healing to take place and blockages to be removed if you do manage to get together with some musicians and have a jam.

Full-Moon-February-25Mercury is retrograde right now too and conjunct Mars so this could Moon could bring to a head some of the nasties I mentioned in the Mercury Retrograde post such as “drug-fuelled arguments and domestic violence” If you happen to be in a rocky relationship, be vigilant. However the North Node is trine the Mercury/Mars conjunction and making a learning triangle*. Lessons to be learnt here, the potential for some karmic rebalancing and since the North Node is on the lucky northern scale of Libra hopefully justice will prevail.

Full Moon Aspects

Moon square Jupiter “This aspect knows no restraint and can over-react, over-reach and promise the world when it has no idea if it can deliver. Moon square Jupiter is a gambler and risk taker, 90% of the time luck does swing their way, but when they do fail, they fail spectacularly.” Oooh well this is really going to throw some gasoline onto the Cybelean wild fire isn’t it? It does have its positive side though “Their lust for life is infectious and the radiant smile they wear is usually enough to make-up for and distract from any annoying diva behavior.” It might actually be a great month for organizing a drag-queen or fetish party. Get out your most flamboyant costumes and rig up the karaoke machine. Top of the request list; Moon square Jupiter goddess herself… Cher. ( Cybele trine Mars would you “Believe”!)

Sun square Jupiter will bring out the need to create ones own luck that was seeded at the Lady Luck New Moon. “Lucky breaks and popularity can lead to an inflated ego and excesses in other beliefs and in material areas of life. If the ego is kept under control from the tests that the square brings, then the expansiveness of Jupiter can lead to great personal and material success.” Full Moon February 2013Chiron in the T-square emphasizes the need for some spiritual guidance to help with self control. Dial a Shaman. If this moon is aspecting our own chart strongly this maybe the point at which we realize we might need some help managing our anger issues or addictions. With Mercury Retrograde happening at the same time we can take this opportunity re-wire our negative thoughts and zap the root of any subconscious programming. Look at what triggers any rage during this moon, a clue might come from which house this moon falls into.

The Sabian symbol for this moon is “A girl takes her first dancing lesson”. Again stressing the importance of finding a wise mentor. The girl has to feel the music in her body, become entranced by it, much like Cybele does with her accompanying Dionysian dancers. But the teacher also lays down some rules and steps to follow. During this moon one has to accept and surrender to the teachers experience. There is a balance to be made between logic and intuition. One has to let oneself go but then also pay attention to the instructions. The healing takes place because one is finding balance between the two hemispheres of the brain. The lesson for this moon is like the tarot card “Strength”, one must learn to tame the beast within, without castrating it completely.

Full Moon keywords

Balance, taming, mentoring, drag-queens, trans-gender, transforming, techno trance, inner-strength, anger management, de-programming, reveling, shamanic healing rituals, drumming, tribal dancing, sound therapy, drum & bass, belly dancing, totem animals, roaring lions, rugged terrain, whirling dervishes, winding up, letting-go, shamans, wise elders, old eccentrics.

*Learning triangles are an aspect pattern used in the Huber school of astrology. Learning triangles can be large or small, but always comprise of a red, blue and green aspect. In this case, the planets in square create the conflict, there is karmic adjustment between the planets of the quincunx then harmony is restored by the planets in trine.

Asteroid Cybele

asteroid cybele Cybele is an earth mother goddess with a twist, she is a rather colourful character depicted as an exotic foreigner arriving on a chariot drawn by roaring lions and escorted by drunken, ecstatic revellers playing wild music. Cybele was originally an ancient Anatolian (Asia Minor) mother goddess who was then assimilated by the Greeks. She is the goddess of mountains and lions. In some parts of Greece she was absorbed into other earth goddesses Gaia, Rhea and Demeter.

Cybele was famed for her entourage of transgender and eunuch priests and her consort was a castrated Shepard, name of Attis. She is quite the paradox then, chiefly known from being this fertile, earth Goddess, but evidently not having much chance of having children from her dismembered partner. The Romans reinvented Cybele as a Trojan goddess, but her true meaning, her mystery and the manner of her worship is hotly debated to this day. However “Her associations with hawks, lions, and the very stone of the wild, mountainous Anatolian landscape, suggest her as mother of the land and its wild, untrammelled nature, with power to dominate, moderate or soften its latent ferocity, and control its potential threats to a settled, civilised life.” [1]

Cybele Symbolism

To me Cybele is a sabre-toothed Ceres on steroids… with claws. Although Cybele is a devoted mother, as a foreigner her parenting style is distinctly “uncivilised”. The Greeks were in awe of her, took her into their culture but in reality held her at arms length. Her animalistic behaviour and liking for wild places estranged her from her fellow Olympian mother goddesses. It seems her rituals involved a great deal of manic bashing of percussion instruments, hollering and frenzied gyrating dancers. This cacophony was thought to be healing rather like an ancient version of Drum & Bass or techno trance.. Cybele’s consort Attis in artwork of the time is shown as her subordinate, always younger than her and of course he is a eunuch. Attis starts off as a rugged and handsome Shepherd, but after his self-mutilation he is referred to as a female.

Cybele in modern culture I think would be someone like Barbara Windsor (Cybele sextile Mars) who played a great matriarch in the soap opera Eastenders, but ironically never had any children herself. In her biography she states she had 5 abortions. She has been famously married to “Toy Boy” Scott Mitchell since 2000. Also what sprung to mind immediately was Liza Minelli (Cybele conjunct Sun trine Moon!) with her very weird looking husband, she also has had no children due to complications during a miscarriage. Lastly lioness and gay icon Madonna with her adoring entourage of male dancers is so obvious that I wasn’t surprised to find Cybele conjunct her DC by just 18’. Negatively the Cybele archetype could probably be seen in the cult classic film “Mommy Dearest” a biography of actress Joan Crawford who was known as a control-freak, obsessed with housework. She adopted 5 children and was as strict on them as she was herself. I think this very tight controlling is the when our wild lioness Cybele is put in captivity. It seems Cybele needs to run wild in order to purge all her wound-up anger,  just like over-working oneself calls for a Saturnalia once in a while. The tighter you wind-up the coil the faster it spins when you let go of it.

Asteroid Cybele Discovery chart

cybele discovery chartAsteroid Cybele was discovered on March 8 1861, it is one of the largest Asteroids (273 km) but very irregular in shape. It takes 6.3 years to orbit the Sun. It gives its name to a family of asteroids, which have a similar orbit as Jupiter. Like asteroid Artemis it is a C-type asteroid meaning it is dark and carbonaceous. Well for a dramatic lady, we get a dramatic chart! I love Moon opposite Jupiter, blatantly the foreign mother, we have what the Huber’s call an irritation triangle* which is subject to sudden bursts of anger. With the Sun quincunx Jupiter “Pushing hard is a way to relieve the tension and this is why these people often appear lucky. However, by putting so much of themselves, their identity on the line, if the scales tip then they can show the Jupiter tendency to excess in a negative way, through guilt or addiction.”

The geometry of the chart looks like the stately queen being pulled along in her chariot by the wild lions comprised of an explosive Mars conjunct Pluto (Her bottled up rage) and the forbidden fruit of Ceres sextile Lilith (Which may help to uncork that anger). You can see within the chart Cybele has an uptight Venus opposite Saturn penetrating the irritation triangle. Venus is in Fomalhaut, so she is deeply romantic and idealistic at heart, maybe she seeks salvation in her young, placid, but most importantly patient male escort. As a team they rather balance each other out, but you can see their relationship can so easily fall into unhealthy co-dependance where he is neutered by her overpowering dominance and dependence on her financial support and mothering and she feels like nothing without his adoration and devotion.

Cybele Meaning

asteroid-cybeleI noticed the orb for Cybele seems to be wider that most asteroids maybe due to its size and orbital period. So I would give it 3 degrees. Cybele can manifest in a variety of ways. In a man the most negative can be seen in someone like Jimmy Saville who worshipped his mother to such an extent that he lived with her until she died. He was a confirmed bachelor and no other woman could match up to her. He had Cybele square his Venus/Ceres conjunction. Otherwise this could indicate a man who adores his mother but never really grows up or leaves home. I know a few situations like this where the son ends up acting as the elderly mothers manservant, driving her around and being her carer, of course regular relationships will suffer and these subjects will often remain unmarried.

Cybele harmoniously aspected in a man’s chart can just be fascination with exotic, foreign women who are in touch with their wild, earthy side. But in hard aspect they may find these lionesses too frightening and emasculating for them. Moon conjunct Cybele is a good example, but can be a mix of both hard and soft attributes. In a woman one of two things can happen, they may be attracted to quite placid, feminine men or conversely foreign men of a different race and creed. I have noticed females with harmonious Cybele/Moon greatly admire their mother who becomes a strong role model for them.

It all depends on what planets Cybele is in aspect to because like Ceres there a dark side to Cybele coming from the wild perchance to Dionysian revelling that can show addiction problems. With Cybele, as shown in the discovery chart, there can be problems managing anger too. I have found a few violent alcoholics (Sun conjunct Cybele) here and spouses who are attracted to dangerous relationships. This seems most noticeable when Cybele is in hard aspect to Mars, Ceres, Lilith or Pluto. I think Cybele is a very interesting and unusual archetype, she is complex though and quite hard to read in a chart as to how it will play out. Where she falls in your chart is the area of your life where you need to release your wild, exotic, loud and frenzied side. Cage this big cat at your peril!

Pisces Decan 1The sun glides like a gondola through romantic Pisces decan 1 from February 19 – 29. It’s easy to get very enchanted by this otherworldly zone of Aquarius, Pegasus, the Swan, the Southern fish and the Sculptor. It is the home of dreamy Fomalhaut (Archangel Gabriel), the rosey twinkle in the eye of the southern fish. It is also a very psychic area of the cosmos with 6 prophetic stars residing here. This zone is a bohemian artists dream, where one can catch the muses and write inspiring music, art and poetry. Here one can absorb and blend into the landscape and be receptive to the flow of inspiration from the collective. But oh so sensitive, there can be the problem of feeling other peoples pain. Pisces decan 1 are great empaths, but prone to self-medication when they take on too much of other peoples woes. In anesthetising themselves there can be alcohol or drug abuse.

Enif in Pegasus has its head firmly stuck in the clouds. Like the preceding decan in Aquarius these subjects are visionaries. However in dreamy Pisces, they less likely to take steps to make these visions reality. The problem is that very often Pisces decan 1 thinks those mirages actually ARE reality. You can see that there are far less Ascendant Decan 1 celebrities than Suns. This maybe because the Sun at least has some creative fire about it, the ascendant needs activation from a partner perhaps. Somehow these people just seem to float into fortune without making any great effort, much to the chagrin their industrious Saturnian friends. Sadalmelik in Aquarius’s shoulder is known as the “Luckiest of the Lucky” and this seems to play out. These cats always fall on their feet. Fomalhaut as one of the archangel stars can be extremely fortunate, but only if they use their gifts with integrity and for the greater good. Otherwise Fomalhaut can be very, very bad and can take a great fall, just like Pegasus’s rider. That’s the feeling of the whole decan. Water needs to be kept flowing as it can absorb more negativity than any other element and of course stagnant water becomes toxic very quickly.

Pisces Stars

1º 53’ Pisces ~ Enif in Pegasus’s nose.
3º 46’ Pisces ~ Sadalmelik in Aquarius’s right shoulder.
3º 52’ Pisces ~ Fomalhaut in Pisces Austrinus.
5º 20’ Pisces ~ Deneb Adige in the heart of Cygnus.
6º 50’ Pisces ~ Biham in Pegasus’s head.
7º 14’ Pisces ~ Beta in Sculptor.
8º 52’ Pisces ~ Skat in Aquarius’s shin bone.*

One thing about all the stars in Pisces decan 1 is that there isn’t much of the beast about them, Gabriel is the only human Archangel (Compared to Regulus, Antares and Aldebaran). The animals in this constellation are hardly wild and all the stars are placed above the waist, so there is something very chaste about them, but that doesn’t stop them from being the worlds worst flirts. Look don’t touch, these subjects turn unrequited love into an artform. They will tease you until you are half insane then disappear leaving just a puff of sapphire fairy dust. This dust will stain your clothes and seep into everything you own. They certainly leave an impression, even if it’s something as prosaic as a stubborn red wine stain on your carpet and brewers droop in the bedroom… In the worst cases, like Neptune, they are often more successful at serenading love than actually making love.

Poetic Seducers

Pisces Decan 1Pisces decan 1 has the voice of a siren and is an ace seducer, they can charm you into doing anything for them which is again why they don’t often need regular jobs. These poets always find a willing benefactor with a spare sofa. Still these folk do happen to be very talented with a fabulous imagination and often musical ability to match. So it would be kind of a waste to have them stacking shelves in your local supermarket. Once they come out of their “jazz cigarette” haze and put their notes on paper, Deneb Adige does insure that the artists among them make gains from their talent seeing this star has a fortunate influence over artistic or scientific pursuits. “To prove this, it is interesting to find several well known artists and writers, who could make good money with their art, be it manifold activities in the acting art or achieving record sales of their printed works.” [1]. This star is also known for unsteady affections being a late developer. So decan 1 Pisces do seem to have a fairytale, Peter Pan feel about them. They retain their childlike wonder at the world long past their midlife. This maybe because their luck at not really having to bear much responsibility for others, they travel light and they float high.

Skat in Aquarius is another one of the prophetic stars in the list, it also gives “good fortune and lasting happiness”.  It’s another one of the stars that give luck with the opposite sex. I think this section looks great for marrying into wealth. They be the glamorous, charming trophy spouse or be free to pursue their art through having a very wealthy and supportive partner. The main thing about Pisces decan 1 is they really do need an agent, benefactor or partner with business savvy and common sense to make their executive decisions for them. So enraptured with the creative process these fish sometimes float cluelessly into the teeth of a great white shark. They have a rather charming faith that everything is good in the world, but often feel incredibly hurt and let down when they find out not everyone is Snow White.

Pisces Decan 2

Pisces decan 2Pisces decan 2 are the most slippery of the fishes, now you see them, now you don’t. The Sun slithers through this sultry zone from March 1 –10. This area houses Aquarius’s water, the male watersnake, Eridanus the river, the Phoenix, the Sculptor and the west fish of Pisces. These amphibious creatures are masters of disguise and can blend into any environment effortlessly. This decan is probably the most liquid area of Pisces, which means it also risks being the most toxic. These subjects are supremely absorbent of their environment, so can work positively or negatively. This placing would be great for a spy, but the most criminal and slimy of individuals could turn this great power into something quite nefarious.

With this decan the evolutionary state of the soul is paramount, they can absorb toxins just as well as they can absorb love and bliss. Whatever the choice, they will just suck the juice out of it, so it better be good juice. Sometimes these people just don’t know who they are, so they are prone to being easily moulded and manipulated by those closest to them. Pisces decan 2 should therefore try to associate with the clean living and spiritually aware. Much depends how earthed the rest of the chart is, but keeping in with the right crowd will keep nasty scum from accumulating on our fishes tank!

The symbol of Pisces is as ambiguous as its subjects, two fishes swimming in opposite direction, but tied together by a cord for all eternity. Pisces can be the womb or the tomb, it is on the threshold of resurrection. Pisces can be the victim or the savior, or waver between both. At worst it can be the martyr who sacrifices so much of it self that all is left is a very bitter and resentful empty shell of what once was. With the water snake here this festering anger can manifest in two ways. Either it results in illness in the subject or they could inflict viperous revenge on those they were once so devoted.

Pisces Stars

11º 35’ Pisces ~ Lambda Aquarius in the flowing water.
12º 06’ Pisces ~ Alpha Hydrus in the male watersnake.
15º 19’ Pisces ~ Achernar in Eridanus the river.
15º 30’ Pisces ~ Ankaa in the Phoenix.
15º 34’ Pisces ~ Delta Sculptor.
16º 09’ Pisces ~ Homam in Pegasus’s neck.
18º 35’ Pisces ~ Beta Pisces in the western fish *

Pisces’s water is the font of all life and it is essentially the Mother. According to Liz Green “one of these fishes is the great fertility goddess, the other her son. She is devouring, destructive and lascivious; the primordial world of instinct. He is the redeemer, Ichthys, the Christ. They are bound forever by the cord, which ties their tails; they cannot escape one another. This ambivalent attitude towards the fish in ancient religious symbolism reflects this pairing, for on the one hand it is unclean and an emblem of hatred and damnation, and on the other it is an object of veneration” [1]. So the positive side of Pisces decan 2 is their superb ability to redeem themselves and help others to do so. They can be a powerful example of salvation and give hope for those in the most wretched of circumstances. If their water is sparkly clean and vibrant then these subjects can be great healers and miracle workers. The fountain of wisdom from Aquarius’s urn can yield inventions and cures that have a huge impact on humanity.

Victim or Saviour

The main star for this decan is Achernar a very bright star in the mouth of the river Eridanus. This end of this river interestingly connects with Rigel in the foot of Orion, another resurrection god. It’s not surprising then this star is associated with religion and considered very fortunate, giving success and high status. I think though like Fomalhaut in Pisces decan 1, in serving the public, the beneficence will only manifest if one works with integrity and for the greater good. “Well-placed, it promises happiness and success by giving good morals, faithful adherence to one’s religious beliefs or philosophical inclinations.”

eridanus

Close by is another major star Ankaa in the Phoenix resides here which perfectly symbolises the power of christ the son’s resurrection. “It is said to give a pioneering disposition, ambition and power, together with a long life and lasting fame.”  Here resides the creative and manipulative Sculptor, but also brings in the element of life-giving clay and mineral rich mud. Again we get the feeling of the great fertility of this section. It seems that if this section of the sky cannot be very creative then the energy her can only implode and be very destructive.

The last named star Homam in the neck of high flying Pegasus. Originally called “The Whisperer”, it was one of a group of fortunate stars. In recent times though the constellation of Pegasus has been associated with accidents, unbridled ambition and recklessness. My take on this particular area of Pegasus is that I think it does give the ability to rise above very dire circumstances, just like the Phoenix. Homam being in the neck, ensures these subject will “stick their neck out’ on behalf of the weak for which they will be rewarded. I believe though, if the subject is flying from reality in a negative way, for example through bombing out on Neptune’s drugs, then it is more likely that (like Pegasus’s rider Bellerophon), their sudden unexpected downfall will hit them very low and very hard.

Pisces Decan 3

Pisces decan 3Pisces Decan 3 is the zone of the impossible, for here we have aeronautical fishes! The sun flies through this decan from March 11 – 20. This zone is totally dominated by the visionary, high-flying, mythical horse Pegasus, with a lizard, a swan and a star measurer. We get the feeling that this Piscean water is simmering, about to boil over as it makes its way to the new life born on the spring equinox at 0º Aries. This zone is bursting with anticipation for the future and impatient because its like these subjects have been cocooned for so long.

Pisces decan 3 can make calamitous mistakes by over-reaching themselves. These eager foals need to remember that half-baked ideas do not go down well, and hold back until their plans are fully developed. The later end of the decan, especially those on the anaretic 29º are natural daredevils and aim high in all things. They are prone to accidents due to their impulsive natures, but are very “gung ho” about it and get back in the saddle as soon as they can.

These fishes are often confused as to why they are such hotheads when the usual descriptions of Pisces are so laid back and lanquid. Not so with decan 3! They retain the wonderful Piscean imagination, mysticism, musical talent and psychic ability, but they are more likely to put these talents to use because of their great desire to see their name in starry lights. They are ambitious visionaries and will not stop until they see their dreams materialise. The biggest problem with this decan is over-reaching themselves and the danger of burn out.

Pisces Stars

21º 22’ Pisces ~ Beta Reticulum the star measurer.
23º 29’ Pisces ~ Markab in the wing of Pegasus.
24º 01’ Pisces ~ 1 Lacerta in the reptiles nose.
24º 23’ Pisces ~ Sadalbari in the chest of Pegasus.
25º 43’ Pisces ~ Matar in the right knee of Pegasus.
28º 17’ Pisces ~ Azelfafage in the tail of Cygnus the swan.
29º 22’ Pisces ~ Scheat in the left leg of Pegasus.

With the star measurer here these subjects are naturally fascinated by the cosmos, meta-physics and what makes the universe tick. They can also simply be very enamoured by stardom. Some just crave fame for fames sake, because they desperately want to be somebody. Those who don’t have the necessary talent become eternal Cinderella’s, convinced that a handsome prince is on his way to whisk them away from their drudgery and put them on the throne they deserve. Their imagination does see the fairytale in everyday life and even if things are quite bleak, they are always craning their neck above the “prison bars” of reality smiling at their rainbow future that will surely come. Yes, they can see it, it’s totally real to them, and some with very strong powers of visualisation can indeed make it happen, somehow, somewhere…

The potent mind-power comes from Markab the alpha star in the wing of Pegasus which is said to influence above all the spiritual and mental nature, to give a good head for figures, intellectual alertness, mental powers in general and last but not least, the ability to further propaganda activity, if at the same time relevant aspects are also present.” The ability to put a positive spin on things can come in useful and these people can make career out of it working in glamour industries such as fashion, film and advertising. In Vedic astrology the 24th nakshatra where this star resides is called “The Former beautiful”. So Pisces decan 3 can have beauty physically or they will be someone who can make things appear beautiful through art or design. But they are no bimbos’ remember Pegasus is the intellectual. The fact their minds are so busy, might be the reason they are so accident prone. Practical things, like simple walking in a straight line might be a problem… Thankfully this star does give “honor, riches and fortune” [1], so they can easily pay the bill for repairing all those mangled fetlocks.

Daring Visionaries

The reptilian Lacerta may at first seem at odds sitting in amphibious Pisces, but there is an unlikely connection. Lacerta and Lacrima (latin for tears) have the same latin root. When the lizard sheds its skin it come off in patches looking lacerated and lace like. So these subjects can go through trauma, ball their eyes and look like a shredded mess, but like the lizard can magically regenerate its limbs.

Pisces decan 3So although Pisces decan 3 may have accidents, even if they are life threatening ones, they bounce back pretty quickly. These people are the comeback kings and queens. Azelfafage falls in Cygnus the Swan’s tail, the constellation in general “gives a contemplative, dreamy, cultured and adaptable nature. The affections are ill regulated and unsteady, the talents develop late. There is some love of water and swimming and the arts.” I have a theory that tail stars have a volatile edge to them, and tend to lash-out, which fits in with Pegasus’s tendency to reactive impulsively. So the swan here (Unlike Aquarius decan 1) is more likely to spit at you if you upset them, rather than quietly glide away.

Last but not least is the infamous Scheat in the flying horses left leg. Jamie has written about Constellation Pegasus. I think this sums up Scheat very well, he says it “gives ingenuity, a brilliant mind, but also being so far ahead in ones thoughts that others think you are mad. It gives you blind faith and does not make one inclined to look before one leaps. A certain naivety can prove advantageous however, because I think if one did see just how dangerous the path was, one would never take it.” Scheat is also on the verge of becoming “The star of our age” since in 2045 it will reach Aries point and move into the tropical constellation of Aries. I believe Scheat has a lot to do with the advancement of futuristic technology and connecting minds through the internet. Surfing online is very fluid, here barriers come down and there is a transparency between people that we didn’t have 20 years ago. Exposing photos of oneself to the world on social network media is very Pisces decan 3. Scheat knows now bounds, and sees no boundaries. The sky is indeed the limit.

March 11 New Moon – Starry Eyed

$

New Moon March 2013The new moon on March 11 2013 is at 21º Pisces, it falls in star-struck Pisces decan 3 and on Beta Reticulum, the star measurer. How cosmic is that? This is high-flying Pegasus’s domain and will be the last new Moon before the spring equinox (a mere 9 days away).Yee har, the sap is rising and it is fitting that so many personal planets are grouped in the womb of Pisces. Symbolic too is the fact rampant Mars is at 29º Pisces, (Oh Scheat!!) butting at the gate of Aries, ready to charge into springtime. We all damn well can’t wait another second. At this Moon, the Yod of December 21 comes into effect yet again making us all wonder any paradigm shift happened. Well the world didn’t end, but the Pope resigned! That’s a Jupiter Yod for you.

Finger Of God

Religion and politics are two powerful ways of controlling the masses and are blended together in this Yod. Will we get some kind of political saviour, or is this the anti-christ? Yods are so unpredictable and can go either way. But it is looking very likely that the election of a new Pope will be during this Yod phase that ends April 7. (They have until March 19 according to tradition). At this Moon, a Mercury retrograde sets fire to the tip of this Yod by a dynamic square aspect.

We can protect ourselves with that healing Chiron/Saturn/Pluto minor grand trine, so keep hold of your crystals and anchor yourself because there a lot of slooshy Piscean water about. And wasn’t Christ the fisher of men? Hmmm…Just look at that stellium! It’s making me feel rather sea-sick already.. We may be rather feeling lost at sea, but thankfully we have the New Moon in Reticulum! A Reticulum is an ancient star measurer. It’s a grid of fine lines, like a net, placed inside a telescope to measure the size of the object being looked at. Stars represent our dreams, our highest hopes, placing them in a Reticulum is like we are putting them into a structure, to assess them, seeing if we can realistically make these stellar fantasies work on earth.

New Moon Aspects

It is interesting that the election of a new Pope may take place under a New Moon square Black Moon Lilith and she happens to fall in the lascivious twin baby goats also. One wonders if there are more scandals to come out. The momentousness of electing a funky new pope maybe a last ditch attempt to repair the Catholic churches sullied image. The timing of electing a new pope just before the Spring Equinox, the lamb of God, is interesting indeed. We should have a new Pope in time for Jesus’s resurrection on Easter Monday (April 1 this year). All very synchronistic.

new-moon-march-2013In the microcosm of our own lives, Moon Square Lilith is about triangular relationships that will either make or break. You may be asked to choose between mother and spouse, child and lover or family and spiritual path. If this aspect plugs into your own chart strongly exceptional demands may be made of you to make heartbreaking decisions, which in the end may exile you from your family. This is especially true since Lilith is wide conjunct Ceres too.

Sun square Lilith “seems to create incredibly strong-willed, feisty individuals who take it upon themselves to become spokespeople for the disadvantaged or for gritty, dark issues that are disturbing for the public in some way” is the same energy of Moon square Ceres but applied to the collective. “ seeking to rescue those in the most need. They must be careful however that their saving doesn’t turn into a saviour complex as when this aspect warps, it warps big.” If Ceres can’t have children she will mother the world via conservation or ecology.

All can see in this Moon is the vocation of someone who choses the priest or priestess path, but has to say goodbye to the secular family life. On a personal level some of the issues may be about coming to terms with infertility, the menopause or accepting that its okay to have chosen a career over having children and not feeling pressurised by the biological clock ticking. Or one could be simply be tempted to bunk off work for a long weekend of Ceres’ herbs or hops and fly like Pegasus that way… Be careful with your starry eyed trippin’ hold onto a sober friend.

Moon conjunct Demeter, Sibyl & Sophrosyne

It’s a busy moon asteroid wise. We double the Ceres influence since Demeter is the Greek version of the grain goddess and also double the witch because Sibyls were travelling prophetesses and respected oracles (Lilith). Sophrosyne is the Greek goddess of moderation and temperance. It’s meaning is complex, a mix of “everything in moderation”, enlightenment through balanced living, integrity, harmony and purity. I had been thinking about Hypatia of Alexandria while writing this post, one of the first female mathematicians. She was highly respected teaching philosophy and astronomy in Roman Egypt but was brutally murdered for allegedly causing conflict between the governor and bishop of the time. She was accused of all manner of beguilement and witchcraft but Wikipedia notes her as a prime example of a Sophrosyne due to the fact all her life “she remained a virgin” and that she rejected a suitor with her menstrual rags, saying that they demonstrated “nothing beautiful” about carnal desire.”

New Moon March 2013Stargazing, astronomy, purity, everything in moderation, so even getting spaced out on your favourite sacred herb is ok then? This moon seems to suggest there is a place for everything. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing, there are times in our lives where we will be mothers, fathers, lovers, wise elders, celibate, nymphomaniacs, drinker or teetotal. Nothing is bad as long as you respect when a season has come to an end. Know the value of a ritual (Lilith) as opposes to blindly repeating habits (Moon). We are now on the threshold of a new season, how are we going to mark this changeover? We could simple eat a lot of chocolate eggs, or make a plan to start something new at the next new Moon in Aries. Plant something symbolic, a very important seed we want to bear fruit in a year’s time.

The Sabian symbol is also very fitting “A prophet bringing down the new law from the mountain”. Like the reticulum it is bringing the stars down to earth. It can also be channelled information and revelations from above. With the Piscean/Pegasus influence too its really not surprising. This symbol like the Jupiter Yod is about uniting people in faith and channelling that energy like a wand into manifesting a new reality. The symbol warns though, that those who want to control can equally use the religious power in this Yod to divide and conquer. We, like Sophrosyne must use its great power with integrity.

Constellations – Near & Far

CentaurusThere are two methods of using the fixed stars and their constellations for astrological purposes nowadays. 1) The fixed stars longitude method on the ecliptic or 2) The visual astrology of parans. The ecliptic is the path the Sun takes to travel around the earth, and it comprises the 360 degrees of the zodiac. The use of  fixed stars in astrology goes back thousands of years, but since many of the important books were probably burnt in the fire of the great library in Alexandria, we may never really knowprecisely how the fixed stars were used astrologically as opposed to astronomically.

Hipparchus devised the first known catalogue of fixed stars in 129 BC when he projected 850 stars onto the ecliptic. Ptolemy the famed astrologer, astronomer and mathematician from Alexandria expanded this earlier work. At the end of 149 AD, Ptolemy had listed 1022 stars by longitude and latitude. This time Ptolemy took precession into account so this star list could be used by future generations. This was a complete innovation. It was published in his influencial astronomical work Almagest. This way of working with the fixed stars caught on in a big way, since it was beautifully simple. It completely wiped out the complex use of parans, which were thought to have been used previously.

Ptolemy’s tables were in use for an incredible 1000 years, but fixed star astrology fell out of favour during the uprise of Christianity. Ptolemys work was rediscovered in the Arab world however. Astronomer Ulugh Beg (1394-1449) produced star maps that were based on the poles of the celestial equator rather than the ecliptic. His positions differ from Ptolemy’s by about 1 degree due to advanced instruments and a better understanding of physics. To get a better understanding of the differences between the two systems there is a great debate here on Skyscript’s forum that explains the history and science of the longitude system of using fixed stars.

Parans

Bernadette Brady advocates the use of parans with fixed stars and refers to Anonymous of 379 BC’s “Treatise On Bright Fixed Stars” in which it is stated that only fixed stars close to the ecliptic should be used in the manner of Ptolemy and that the only true way to use those above the ecliptic is by using parans. I suspect this recommendation is due to inaccuracies of measuring fixed stars off the ecliptic almost 2000 years ago. Science has moved on quite abit since then! Brady also says we shouldn’t confuse Ptolemy’s Astronomy  (Almagest) with his Astrology (Tetrabiblios). I don’t know if Ptolemy used parans as I can find no reference for it, neither can I find any current book on fixed stars that uses them. Since 1930, fixed star astrologers, Vivian Robson, Elsbeth Ebertin, Eric Morse and the late Diana Rosenberg all use the longitude method for their interpretations.

I personally prefer the longtitude method because it is universal in terms of location. For example if I used parans to read an eclipse, I would have to do a chart for every single city on earth! I also prefer the ecliptic method for natals since with parans everyone born on the same day in the same city, gets the same rising and midheaven star. These days generally, in the US at least, birth times are recorded which again makes me think parans would’ve been more useful in times when birth times were not. I would like to share with you how I  use the fixed stars in my own practice. It is so easy to get swamped by them, so I have arranged a tiered system. In this way we open up the mythology all the constellations, near and far. You can look up a stars latitude on constellation of words .

Constellations & Latitude

NEIGHBOURS: Fixed stars close to the ecliptic are generally those from the constellations of the zodiac. Like the star Regulus for Leo, Aldebaran for Taurus, Antares for Scorpio and so on. We can give these a 2º.30 -3º orb if they are of the 1st or 2nd magnitude because their effects are strong in that their messages speak to us loud and clear. We don’t need translation and we are familiar with their archetypes through the popular use of star sign astrology. Stars on the ecliptic are like they are standing in the same room with you, both on the same level. You can hear each other clearly and are speaking the same solar language. The language is down to earth, personality based and focuses on humanities struggle with its own ego.

CorvusFOREIGNERS: Then we have some constellations that sit close by the ecliptic, but who are not so familiar to us like Ophuichius, Orion, Corvus and Canis Minor. We can also feel their effects strongly, they might even speak the same language, but then we have to listen more carefully due to foreign accents! Examples Sirius, Fomalhaut, Capella, Ras Alhague, Rigel, Algorab, Algol. These stars are more complex and we are starting to look at different cultures and ideologies. Just like Neptune, some of these energies can manifest negatively in an un-evolved being, the dangers of addictions and criminal tendencies are strong here especially with Algol and Algorab. These stars I use between 1º 30 -2º orb depending on their magnitude.

ALIENS: After that things get more mysterious and otherworldly. We need a radio to tune into their messages. With these far off stars are at higher latitudes so the orb has to be very tight, just like tuning into an fm station. The general rule for me is, the further off the ecliptic, the tighter the orb needed. But there is also another consideration; What is the consciousness level of the subject with this star? Can they even understand and utilize the energy that is being transmitted down to them? Difficult stars higher up like Phecda (+47 latitude) could manifest to some ears as garble and noise. The stars could literally drive you mad. This is probably how Phecda’s lower manifestations, like bloodlust and sexual obsession end up being becoming one of its characteristics. I would give a very, very tight orb to Phecda! Maybe only 15’. Examples of other stars in this category: Phact, Canopus, Toliman, Vega, Polaris, Deneb Adige. Again bare in mind the magnitude. I’d give between 30’ and 55′ (Under a degree) for these.

Decans

I think it is important to join the mythology of the zodiac back up to the sky from where it came. Precession has ripped the constellations off their original bearings. Tropical astrologers now use a system that bears no relation the actual sky co-ordinates, it is a seasonal astrology that only makes sense to those in the northern hemisphere. In fact it was of course Australian, my husband Jamie Partridge who introduced me to the wonders of fixed star astrology.

Constellation Pegasus

In modern times astrologers have no need to refer to the sky at all to practice their craft. Very few astrologers nowadays have telescopes, astrology software does the job far better of course, but our connection to the cosmos may have suffered as a consequence. Ancient cultures had Henges (Such as Stonehenge) which gave a profound connection to the stars and planets through these stone observatories. Rituals of space and time make us self-aware, observers of ourselves and our actions, it makes us accountable. Astrology is religion in the truest sense, it re-links us with everything.

Religare in latin means “to connect”. Religion can also be the tie that binds and constricts, so we must remember the planets incline they do no not compel, we have free will to use the stellar energy to it’s highest or lowest potential.I have started to examine the stars and constellations as they fall into the decans of the zodiac signs. This has proved very illuminating as I have found there is indeed a connection between the meaning of the fixed stars and the tropical zodiac signs in which they fall. The late Dane Rudhyar actually said that precession should be taken into account when reading the starsign. I do think it is significant when a fixed star changes signs. It’s all synchronistic and symbolic.

Art & Science

The zodiac signs, the constellations and the fixed stars are all part of an evolving universe, nothing is absolute as new memes come into existence. So like we have Venus in Aries, so too we can have tropical Taurus moving through sidereal Aries, tropical Pisces in sidereal Aquarius and so on… However as we have seen it’s not that simple, there are far more constellations effecting each sign than just one, but Dane has made the connection which I respect. Diana Rosenberg took into account the tropical meaning of the signs in her interpretation of her star sets. I like the thought of re-uniting sidereal with tropical in some way, bringing some astronomy back to astrology. If grouping the fixed stars into decans can do that in some small way then I am happy.

Ptolemy is listed as being an astronomer, astrologer and a mathematician, as if those things were separate. Back in those days they were not. Ancient wisdom has been hacked into separate subjects and the connectivity and magic removed. Take a look at the beautifully illustrated “Book of Fixed Stars” by Ulagh Beg. It is a work of art, not a science manual. Look at Albrecht Durer, this artist and mathematician produced the first printed maps of the constellations in 1515. I think we are coming full circle now though and I’m hoping astronomy and astrology will start to merge once more. Music is maths and colour has vibration. It’s all linked. Astrology has correspondences in our bodies, in colour, in the chakras and even in musical notes. We are indeed made of stars.

Moon Opposite Uranus

Moon opposite UranusMoon opposite Uranus is going to cause a stir wherever you find it. The electric and volatile energy of Uranus seems to become even more unstable than usual in opposition. The polarity creates wild mood swings and the feel of a loose canon. It is sad to see that three accidents/assassinations are in the list of the famous and all of them caused a huge public outpouring of emotion whether it be anger, shock or deep mourning. The revolutionary energy of Uranus though, means that after the lightening bolt has struck, things are never the same again. The subject may have grown up in a very progressive atmosphere or one where roots were very hard to put down because of constant change. Or they may have felt on the fringes of society so that they never really fit in where every they are. So however they live in their adult lives, subconsciously they always feel like something is about to flip out, so they are ready to jump ship very quickly.

Moon opposite Uranus may find it hard to believe that they can really relax and are quite “jumpy” in their demeanour. However these subjects actually thrive very well on adrenaline and stress, it makes them feel alive. If they don’t get the stimulus of frequent buzz and excitement then they may even get quite depressed and not know why. It is essential then, that these subjects have a job or hobby that provides them with something new and novel everyday, otherwise these fireworks could erupt in their family life, a place far too sensitive for this thunderbolt energy. The moon is also the imagination, so the best place for these flashes of innovation to be channelled is through creativity or science. These artists material may be hard-hitting and shocking, but can be used effectively in provocative art or music where people may be moved to take humanitarian action again cruelty and injustice in the world.

March 27 Full Moon – Flamboyant

Full Moon March 2013The full Moon on March 27 2013 is at 6º Libra and on Turies in the great ship Argo. It is opposite Venus the planet of love…ahhh! But don’t get too carried away because we have a striking double yod entangled with some very complex geometry. This could get messy.. You maybe tempted to sail off to sea and if you look at the chart hard enough you can actually see your vessel. It looks like an old schooner, with the Full Moon opposition forming the wooden body, Jupiter up to the crows nest, below Pluto, the sails fan out from Mercury across to Saturn.

There is so much going on, including a replay of the December 21 Yod that was activated at the previous new Moon. At this full Moon however, all those Christmas turkeys really will come home to roost! Everything should be brought to a dramatic conclusion since there is a pretty explosive stellium of Sun, Venus, Mars and Uranus all in Aries decan 1. The canons! Mars square Pluto in the chart is gunpowder, and although the Uranus square Pluto is not in close orb, Mars being so dangerously near Uranus could ignite the whole ship.

Full Moon Aspects

Moon opposite Venus  and Moon opposite Uranus make for an interesting tug of war between the glamorous, and free-spirited lover and the caring, self-sacrificing mother. With Venus conjunct Uranus in the mix, the dutiful mother could suddenly explode and start acting like a wild teenager. It could be an out-of-the-blue shocking love affair that completely stuns the family. Loose canons indeed.Full Moon March 2013The Sun conjunction Venus and Sun conjunction Uranus stellium could have one acting like an indolent nouvelle Marie-Antoinette. There will be a tendency to sugar coat the harsh realities of life with dayglo rainbow coloured icing sugar. The distraction is way over the top. Those who have self-sacrificed their individuality too much will find that when it does bursts out it will need to try out all possible personalities at the same time. It will look like the psychedelic circus has come to town.

These conjunctions all fall in that spicy Aries decan 1, we are now into spring so yet more busting out vibe. The circus schooner lurches forward, its rainbow sails bellowing out like some glorious nautical peacock. Awesome, scary and dramatic it’s very easy to get totally blown away by this full moon. So how are we going to keep ourselves anchored? With great difficulty, there is simply just too much going on. We might just have to accept that the next two weeks is going to be a bit of a fiasco, but it won’t be boring!

Asteroid Justicia

The Moon is pretty much isolated on the other side of the chart, but it has asteroid Justitia, the Roman goddess of justice for company. She holds the scales of truth and fairness and represents divine law. Well I said we needed to bring some order to the chaos! It is apt that this is a Libran (The Scales) full moon then. Justicia is depicted blindfold which represents impartiality. For some it seems the only way to resolve the disputes of this moon will be to take legal action. (Jupiter anchors our ship.) Others will need to seek a counsellor, someone distanced from the circus who can take an objective view. The full moons Sabian symbol is most interesting because it is “A woman feeding chickens and protecting them from the hawks”. This is the caretaker who nurtures while also being alert to danger. A good solicitor can also be someone who shields innocents from the “bad guys”.

full-moon-libra-2013

If we look at the double yod again we can see the aggression and possible abuse of Mars square Pluto hold the situation together on one end and the karmic adjustment of the Jupiter quincunx Saturn is on the other. The solution is the two sextiles. The courage and passion of Mars sextile Jupiter combines with the stamina and determination of Saturn sextile Pluto.

So what looked like a a bit of a senseless pantomime could actually crystallise into something worthwhile after all. So for these two weeks, take all the jumbled elements of your life, even the really silly ones and account for them all. Put them on the scales and assess their weight in your life. This will show up the imbalances. Too many clowns? Restrict yourself to a handful of the funniest and bin the rest. This moon’s aspect pattern is a prequel to the one mention in Mercury Retrograde. It contains a “Model”, the blueprint so you can see how it all works in small before you make the big investment and commit to the real thing.

Full Moon Keywords

Aries Decan 1

Aries Decan 1Aries decan 1 are the new born babies of the zodiac, they come out into the world kicking, screaming and bawling their eyes out. The Sun struts it’s way through constellation Pegasus, the sea monster, the lizard, the Pendulum clock and the King from March 21 – 29. These impulsive souls try everything at once and grab with both hands. They want it all and they want it now. Of course they do, they are the start of a brand new cycle. Everything is fresh, new, shiny and bouncy.

These people are natural leaders, warriors, front line fighters and trail blazers. They have to be the first, best, biggest and bling-est. Gone is the water and the empathy of the previous decan, these folk are so sharply focused on their goals they find it very hard to see their peers right next to them. That is, until one one should try and overtake them, then it’s “Outta my way!!” Yes, road rage was probably first invented by a flamehead on a flying horse.

“To boldly go” is their motto. Jump first and think later, this is why these subjects gain the reputation of scandals, accidents and rash decisions. Pegasus’s daring ideas and vision become far more physical here. These subjects are not stuck up in their ivory towers, they swing right back down to earth after they have captured their stardust. These people are lusty, red blooded and fully present in their physical body, which they cannot wait to “put about”. Aries decan 1’ s sap is rising and it’s eager to start “ramming”  sexually or in the business world. Sometimes these people will campaign forcefully for or against certain sexual/gender rights. They can be controversial, as something about their sexuality tends towards scandal.

Deneb Kaitos is probably the very star that gives the rams their selfish and quite frankly spoilt brat reputation…Scandalous, yes their rampant sexuality gets them into hot water, like the Pendulum clock they could be swingers. Aries decan 1 is not subtle (Gaga) and they can be really flamboyant (Elton), but one thing they can never be accused of is being boring.

Aries Stars

Aries 1º 03’ ~ Kerb in the upper leg of Pegasus
Aries 2º 35’ ~ Deneb Kaitos in the tail of the Sea Monster.
Aries 4º 37’ ~ Eta Horologium in the Pendulum Clock
Aries 7º 28’ ~ Alpha Reticulum in the Star Measurer
Aries 8º 09’ ~ Beta Lacerta in the lizard
Aries 9º 09’ ~ Algenib in the tip of the wing of Pegasus
Aries 9º 42’ ~ Erakis in the right ear of the Ethiopian King

These people are a walking spectacle and fantastic entertainers. Despite their Diva reputation, a dressing room filled with pink kittens is a small price to pay for the fabulous night they are guarantied to give you. Stars in the truest sense, they have so much energy they never disappoint, one watches with awe at their utter professionalism when they work. This is when their focus comes so good, unlike their Piscean neighbours, a crying child in the corner does not disturb them, oh no…So now they are being called selfish again.

Red Ambition

Algenib in Pegasus has a “Penetrating mind and a strong will, as well as determination. An impressive way of speaking and a gift for oratory.”  Yes these people are totally comfortable on stage, taking the leadership role and sitting at the head of the table. They have big heads fit for an even bigger crown. Lastly in the star list we have Erakis in Cepheus the King, but of course we had to have some royalty. Aries decan 1 is very much the Emperor archetype. The star Erakis is deepest ruby and quite stunning to the naked eye, reflecting back to us the ardent passion and spicy red bloodedness of this dramatic decan.

Aries Decan 1

Kerb is in Pegasus’s sexy thigh, and suggestive of Aries’s famous precocious sex drive. Unfortunately this stars only interpretation is “Danger of being jilted by a lover” Presumably something to do with Pegasus’s rider being “jilted” off his back or since these rams are such hot stuff, if their lovers don’t want to end up toast they just have to back off and cool off for self preservation. The raging sea monster Cetus is next up making this zone flame grilled then, its star Deneb Kaitos in the tail makes them lasher outers. Lacerta is here too. Ouch! Don’t give them a whip unless you like S & M. Deneb Kaitos is a very difficult star, said to cause self-destruction, mental illness, a violent temper and recklessness. Aries rules the head, so mental disturbance and hot-headedness go with the territory.
